SecureIT Brand Protection – Responding to Fake Domains and Websites
SecureIT has for some time now offered a critical service that detects impersonation through a partner (SOCRadar), which discovers fake websites that closely resemble our clients’ actual websites.
These impersonations often involve slight alterations in characters or domain extensions to trick people. SecureIT also implements specific technologies that alert us if someone attempts to clone a site, so we can act immediately when someone creates an impersonal of the real website.
We monitor things like company logos, employee photos, and other elements that may be used to create false trust and credibility with people. This has also been used in situations where a fake site is created and people are tricked into logging in, thinking it’s legitimate. Once someone makes a purchase or inputs data, personally identifiable and sensitive information such as credit card details, national ID numbers, and more is stolen. These attacks are even used for extortion, with threats to send stolen data to the Data Protection Authority or expose it publicly.
These kinds of attacks have been happening for quite some time. SecureIT has already taken down numerous such websites and fake social media accounts, which are often used to direct victims to these fraudulent sites. We also want to highlight recent media coverage discussing this exact threat. See, for example:
SecureIT encourages all businesses to consider using these kinds of security services to detect impersonation, avoid financial and reputation loss and reminds everyone to be especially cautious during times like these when Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals are being promoted everywhere.
Let’s stay alert and think twice before clicking on tempting online offers.
